Every so often, a date captures the imagination of many Christians around the world. This year, September 23, 2025, has been promoted by well-meaning saints (perhaps) in online forums, YouTube channels, and Christian chat groups as a potential day for the rapture or the Second Coming of Christ.
For some, the excitement feels electric—signs in the heavens, wars and rumors of wars, political turmoil (including the recent Charlie Kirk assassination), and natural disasters all appear to validate the prediction.
But history cautions us: this isn’t the first time believers have been stirred into prophetic preoccupation, and unless we learn from the past, it won’t be the last.
From the Great Disappointment of 1844, when thousands of Millerites confidently expected Christ’s return, to Harold Camping’s predictions in 1994 and again in 2011, believers have often been caught in the snare of “date setting.”
This time, September 23, 2025, and, here we are, it's come and gone. With each failed prediction leaving behind disillusionment, doubt, despair, and in some cases, people walking away from faith altogether.
As you ought to see, time after time, the human desire for certainty pushes us to seek signs, charts, and timelines that go beyond what God has revealed.
Yet Jesus warned explicitly: “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only” (Matthew 24:36).
Friends, there are at least two extremes that often show up among Christians when it comes to problematic prophetic postures:
Passivity – Some say, “My Lord delays His coming” and grow careless, spiritually stagnant, or disengaged.
Preoccupation – Others chase every new prediction, debate endless timelines, and live in fear of missing out.
Both of those postures miss the point!
Prophecy was never meant to scare us or to give us an intellectual puzzle to solve. Its purpose is to prepare us—to point us to Jesus, strengthen our faith, and guide us into holy living.
As Ellen White once wrote: “The shortness of time is frequently urged as an incentive for seeking righteousness... This should not be the great motive with us... Jesus is attractive. He is full of love, mercy, and compassion. He proposes to be our friend.” (Signs of the Times, March 17, 1887)
The Bible is full of stories that remind us how to prepare the right way.
Noah didn’t set a date for the flood — he obeyed God and built the ark. His faith was demonstrated in action, not speculation (Genesis 6–7).
The Rechabites in Jeremiah 35 modeled faithfulness by obeying the commands of their forefather, even while Judah ignored God’s voice. Their obedience shamed a passive nation.
The Parable of the Ten Virgins (Matthew 25:1–13) underscores the need for readiness, not timeline obsession. The wise virgins had oil in their lamps — they were prepared for delay, prepared for surprise, prepared for the Bridegroom.
The renewed “rapture fever” of 2025 reveals how easily the Christian imagination can be captured by sensational claims. Social media and viral videos amplify the hype, but the spiritual danger is real. When the date passes uneventfully—as it always has—faith can be shaken, seekers may turn skeptical, and cynics will mock the church.
As Christians, especially God's remnant, we hold to the blessed hope (Titus 2:13): Jesus will indeed return, visibly and gloriously, in His time. But we must avoid the twin dangers of passivity and preoccupation. Instead, we’re called to a prophetic posture of proactive obedience—living each day faithfully, prayerfully, and missionally until He comes.
Preparing Your Heart – cultivating spiritual depth and dependence on God.
